Chickens are one of my favourite animals. If you’ve ever had the pleasure of spending time with chickens on a farm or in an allotment you’ll know that they’re the most fun, inquisitive animals and are super friendly once they get to know you. They’re perfect for a bit of stress relief, as long as you don’t mind them pecking you!
This picture is full of different textures that I wasn’t familiar with. Feathers, wings, the comb on its head, scaly feet – it was all new to me and I couldn’t wait to get stuck in.
I started with the tail feathers before moving right to left by doing the wings and then chest, before finishing with the feet and head. I was eager to draw the feathers first as I thought they would be the most challenging part, and I wanted to get them done quickly. I couldn’t be happier with how the feathers and head both turned out, and I think this one is a personal favourite!
Fun fact – chickens very much have their own social hierarchy. The biggest, strongest and most aggressive chickens will make their way to the top of the flock by pecking the others, and this is where the term ‘pecking order’ comes from!
