Duckling

April, 2022 - Part of the Baby Animal collection

One of the things I love most about springtime is being able to walk along the canal and watch all the adorable newborn ducklings! It’s a sure sign that winter is over and the warmer weather is ahead.

Newborn ducks aren’t actually born with feathers, and for the first month or so are covered with a soft, fuzzy layer called ‘down’. This keeps them warm when they’re out of the water until their adult feathers come through, and brings cuteness levels up to a solid 10/10.

I started this drawing by marking out the small lines that would end up as the ducklings down, slowly repeating this and building up layers until it’s little body was covered in them!
