Chick

June, 2022 - Part of the Baby Animal collection

A universally known fact about baby chicks is that they are all, without question, completely adorable.

I knew the key to success for this drawing was to capture the fluffiness of the fur and maintain the chick’s cuteness levels!

Drawing this was quite a similar process to my duckling, in that I started out drawing the eye and beak before adding in little markings over its body to make up the fur. Like ducklings, chicks are born with a layer of fur called ‘down’, which lasts only seven days before feathers start to grow. They’ll go through a series of ‘mini malts’ over the next few weeks until they’re fully feathered, which will be at around 6 weeks.

Fun fact – baby chickens are born with an ‘egg tooth’, which is a little bump on their beak that’s there to poke holes through the egg shell when hatching.

The original drawing will soon be available to buy at Artysan Gallery in Stow-on-the-Wold, the Cotswolds.
